Air Quality Comparison Report: Delhi, NCR, and Mumbai during Diwali
The air quality data collected from Delhi, the National Capital Region (NCR), and Mumbai during the Diwali festivities of 2024 showcase stark contrasts in pollution levels across these major Indian cities.
Study 1: Delhi Air quality levels on Diwali 2024.
The air quality levels in Delhi reached alarming heights during Diwali Peak hours. 31st October 2024, Diwali day recorded 167 at 8:00 Pm the last lowest after this, Air Quality levels just kept rising. Firecrackers started bursting around and Air quality levels peaked. Here are the top locations data midnight:
1. Hauz Khas: 481
2. Paschim Vihar: 658
3. Karkarduma: 806 (highest recorded)
4. Saket: 528
5. Shalimar Bagh: 551
6. Lajpat Nagar: 593
As observed in the graph, the AQI levels were at the lowest in every location in Delhi before 10:00 PM. Till 12:00 AM midnight, AQI reached the worst levels. The study point started at night to check what is the current conditions and continued till 1st November 2024, 7:00 AM.
2nd Study: NCR Air Quality Levels Conditions

As per the above graph, AQI levels in different NCR locations fluctuated as on 31st October 2024, 8:00 PM it was lowest still from unhealthy to severe categories. Then started becoming worse and midnight broke the records as Vaishali, a known place, recorded the highest NCR of 911 levels.
Study 3: Mumbai Air quality levels on Diwali 2024.
AQI Levels in Mumbai locations:
- Worli: Recorded an AQI of 326, reaching an unhealthy level.
- Andheri: Noted a comparatively moderate AQI of 214, staying within the “poor”.
- Bandra: Measured 302 AQI, close to Worli’s level, indicating poor air quality.
The AQI levels in Mumbai at midnight saw a spike but mostly in the “Unhealthy” category.
4th Study: Delhi and NCR Data Comparison
The observed graph has AQI data for Delhi and two NCR locations. All three locations have a steep rise starting from 31st October evening. Around midnight and shortly after it, AQI levels reached their peak. Karkarduma recorded the highest among other locations as around 900. Following Ghaziabad and Noida peaked between 700 to 800 at around midnight.
Study 5: Mumbai Air Quality Comparison with Delhi 2024
As shown in the graph, AQI conditions in Delhi and Mumbai started getting worse after 10:00 PM. Still, Delhi made it out of the line, crossing the 400 AQI level at 10:00PM.
Peak pollution: Both locations showed a significant increase in AQI levels on Diwali day. However, Delhi’s AQI reached 800 at around midnight, and Mumbai’s reached around 300. Delhi’s levels are much higher than Mumbai’s. Delhi faces much higher pollution levels than Mumbai.
Settlement of Dust in the Morning: Air Quality 2024
Gradual Decline: AQI levels in Delhi NCR and Mumbai locations started a gradual drop after 1:00 AM, 1st Nov 2024. However, some locations show a spike in pollution again most probably because of winds. The decline in air quality levels is also the reason for wind speed in Delhi NCR. By Midday on November 1, AQI levels showed a consistent downward trend in every location.
