Last year, in May 2018, northern India suffered great loss with dust storm taking place in major states covering Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Over 100’s of people lost their lives in the massive dust storm.

What causes a Dust Storm in India?

A dust storm is a meteorological phenomenon common in arid and semi-arid regions. Dust storms arise when a gust front or other strong wind blows loose sand and dirt from a dry surface. Fine particles are transported by saltation and suspension, a process that moves soil from one place and deposits it in another.

In the time of sandstorm – What to Do?

  1. Close the doors and windows.
  2. Draw the curtains of your room.
  3. Install air purifier.
  4. Check temperature and humidity of your indoor premises.
  5. Stay indoors to avoid breathing unhealthy air particles.
  6. Stay hydrated and always carry enough supply of drinking water during high pollution alert.
  7. Wear-protected gear such as pollution mask, airtight goggles during sandstorm season.
  8. Cover your face, especially nose and mouth using a damp cloth when indoors.
  9. Wait for the storm to stop.
  10. Apply petroleum jelly to the inside of your nostrils to prevent dust particles to get inside.

  7. Avoid rubbing your eyes in order to prevent eye infection.
  8. Do not use hazard lights, unless you have parked your car in the safe zone. 
  9. During a heavy sandstorm, sharp objects can fly – find shelter and don’t forget to cover your head.
  10. Do not put the air conditioning in your car directly on to your face and in a very cool mode as the chances of you directly inhaling fine dust particles are very high.
